Grow Sprouts at Home in Less Than 5 Minutes a Day

The entire fruit

is

already present

in the seed.

Do you love having fresh sprouts for your salads and sandwiches?  I do, especially this time of year when fresh greens are not available from my garden.  If you have been purchasing your sprouts from the grocery, you will be amazed at the difference in both quality and cost when you grow them at home.  Plus, the variety available to you is vastly more than just alfalfa and bean sprouts!

I have many favorites, from microgreens to grains and dill or radish, I have enjoyed every one I have grown.  I do have a favorite supplier at SproutPeople but you can find seeds many places. Check out the link and look around at what might 'sprout' your interest.  :)

Back to how to do it:  Seriously, this takes less than 5 minutes a day.  I keep the sprouting container right on my kitchen counter and it is easy to remember to care for them daily.  Here are the steps:

  • Clean the sprouting container - the container needs to be very clean to avoid unwanted bacteria - you can use a commercially available sprouter (this is my favorite:  SproutPeople Easy Sprout Sprouter ) or use a glass jar with a mesh sprouting lid or a glass jar with a cheesecloth held in place with a rubber band.
  • Place about 2 Tablespoons of seeds in the jar and fill with cool water to completely cover the seeds to about 1 inch over the seeds.
  • Cover the mouth of the container or jar with the sprouting lid or cheesecloth.  Let sit in a cool spot - not direct sunlight - for 12 hours or overnight.
  • The next day, drain off the water.  Shake vigorously to get nearly all the water off the seeds.  You want them moist but not sitting in water.
  • 2 to 3 times a day, rinse with cool water, drain well and set aside.
  • Seeds will begin to sprout in about 2 days and be ready to eat in about 4 days.
  • When seeds have sprouted to your liking, remove from jar and store in a container with a lid in the refrigerator - use within about 5 days.
There are many places for sprouting seeds and supplies - please be sure to use organically grown seeds since you will be eating not only the sprout but the original seed too.

There are also many tutorials available on the web and Pinterest but if you have any sprouting questions, please drop me a comment/question on this post....I would love to help you grow this nutritious food right at home!

Tomorrow, since it is cold and flu season, I will teach you to make an aromatherapy shower disc with eucalyptus oil to help ease congestion.  Hope to see you then!

Peace be with you,

Star Schipp
